One Electric Manager for Every Village in Maharashtra soon

As an important step towards ensuring proper rural electrification, the state government in Maharashtra has said that they will soon implement ‘one village, one rural electric manager’ scheme.

This is seen as a step towards ensuring that the issues of the rural population related to the electricity connections get a quick resolution. Other states like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana should also take some clue from this scheme.

If implemented in other states, this can lead to the better outreach of rural electrification and can also lead to quick resolution of any electricity related issue in villages. Furthermore, this can also lead to some employment generation which is one of the top most concerns in India.

Maharashtra Power Minister, Chandrashekar Bawankule said, “The scheme will be implemented by gram panchayats. They will act as the franchise”. In the form of a franchise, the gram panchayats will have to attend to some tasks. These tasks will include meter reading, breakdowns management, electricity restoration, street lights maintenance, new electric connections, and stalling electricity connection if arrears are not paid.

Furthermore, Gram Panchayats will get a fee of Rs 9 per consumer. The rural electric manager’s job will be generated on the contract basis. He or she will get a payment of Rs 9 per consumer or Rs 3,000 as a monthly payment. Whichever amount is more will be paid to them.

The power minister further added, “Mahavitaran will insure the rural electric managers and pay the premium”.

Pankaja Munde, State Rural Development Minister was also present at the briefing. Munde said her department is going to appoint gram panchayats as the franchise. Furthermore, their jurisdiction would be on every revenue village.
