The government may to finalise the recent Disabilities Bill by mid – April which gives 5 percent reservation in higher education institutions to the disabled from the ensuing academic session.
Differently-abled persons in the age group of 6 to 18 years will also be able to avail free education.
The recently passed Disabilities Bill, provides reservation in government sector for benchmark disabilities from 3 to 4 percent and in higher education institutes to the tune of 3 to 5 percent.
“Now I’m keen for earliest implementation of this act. We are working to finalise its rules by April 14, including reservation benefits for the disabled,” Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot said.
He further added that the legislation would be a great move forwards for the disabled and brings Indian law at par with the UN Convention.
Under this Act, the government included 14 more disabilities adding upto 21 in all.
The newly added disabilities include mental illnesses, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, chronic neurological conditions, specific learning disabilities, multiple sclerosis, speech and language disability, thalassemia, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, multiple disabilities, including deaf blindness, acid attack victims and Parkinsonism.
As per the Act, crimes against differently-abled women will attract a jail term up to five years.
Any person who breaks any provision of the act will be punishable with a hugest fine of Rs 5 lakh.
