The government has approved the National Health Policy, which aims to provide assured health services to all the citizens of the country.
The government sources have said that the Union Cabinet, which is chaired by the Prime Minister NarendraModi, has given approval to the policy. This policy was pending since last two years.
Most probably, JP Nadda (Union Minister) will make a suomoto statement in the Parliament. This will elaborate on the salient features of the policy.
The health ministry has said that this is major policy shift. This policy will increase the gambit of sectors, which are covered in the Primary Health Centre (PHC). This actually envisages a comprehensive approach.
Till now the PHCs were only meant for immunization and anti-natal check-ups. But according to the new policy screening non-communicable diseases will be there and some other additional aspects too. This fact is confirmed by a senior official.
Under this new policy, the focus will be on upgradation of district hospitals. This is going to be the first time, when such thing is becoming the main focus and there will be an implementation framework in place.
The final decision regarding the policy had been deferred earlier after it was included in the agenda of the Union Cabinet twice before. This National Health Policy has been pending for the past two years, which proposes to provide health services to the people as an “entitlement”.
The cabinet note, which was given earlier but it didn’t talk about making health a “fundamental right”, because it will have legal consequences. But the proposed health services will have such provision. It actually suggests that the Centre must amend laws in order to align them with the current healthcare scenario.
Such health policies will provide the betterment of the society and its people. The Government needs to focus more on such issues and need to avoid long delays in their enforcement.
