In Mumbai, the movement to clean the dirtiest beach of the city is gaining momentum. Students from 12 Mumba colleges are involved in this year-long clean-up drive. This drive is conducted at the dirtiest beach, Chimbai in Bandra.
About 250 college students from St Andrew’s College, Bandra (West), Siddharth College, Fort, Sydenham College, Fort, Rizvi College, Bandra (West), MMK College, Bandra (West) and other seven prominent colleges are involved in this social cause. They have cleared about 600kg of trash in just two days, i.e. 26 February and March 3rd.
A 2016 study out by ReefWatch Marine Conservation, revealed that Chimbai beach, which is one of the smallest beaches in the city, is the most dirtiest. About 30 tonnes of garbage is there on the beach, researchers have found 226 kg of trash every 200 sq. mt.
The Juhu beach is cleaned regularly, so it contains 19kg of garbage and Versova has 54kg of garbage. Versova is now the focus of the major clean up operation. Aksa beach produces about 7.65 kg of garbage in the same area.
Chimbai beach contains more rock,thus it traps most of the garbage between the rocks and the garbage doesn’t get washed away by the sea water.
Sharad Ughade, assistant municipal commissioner, H-west ward, confirmed the fact that even BMC will be actively participating in the initiative and will lead the movement to clean Chimba beach with the college students and local NGOs. They will be appointing an agency to enhance and expedite the process of beach cleaning.
The drive has begun and the authorities will be putting efforts to complete the project plan under Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
It will help create awareness and make citizens understand that the youth is actively involved in cleaning city beaches.

This initiative has made them aware, that the youth seriously needs to stand up and take a step further. A student from St Andrew’s College, said that, they are glad that they’re a part of this movement. And save sea life as well. It is their duty to bring the change they desire.
In conclusion, we can say that this is a great initiative and It will help create awareness and make citizens understand that the youth is actively involved in cleaning city beaches. This is kind of an awakening to others. A commendable job by the students and I hope that this drive will be taken further in the whole country.
