Great Example of Self-Reliance: Rajasthan Villagers Turn 52 Hectares of Barren Land into Lake

As a result of sheer hard work for 5 months of the residents of Ramsar village, 52 hectares of barren land is now a water-conserving lake.

Once, this barren land near Bhilo ki Basti in Ramsar was used as a dumping ground for garbage by villagers.

There was a time when a water outlet on this land worked as a channel to Ramsar Lake, but this channel went dry and the land was left barren over a period of time. As a result of the pre-monsoon showers, the lake is now filled up with eight inches of water.

The district administration provided encouragement to the villagers to construct the lake as the land is in a lower area, which renders it suitable to collect rainwater from nearby areas during monsoons. A sum of Rs. 8 lakh was sanctioned by the administration for the lake, which is now five feet deep with a capacity of 4.08 TMC (thousand million cubic feet).

Now, it also assists in recharging dried up wells in the nearby villages during the summers.

Before initiating the work, farmers were of thought that the administration is providing them with jobs under MGNREGA as they have nothing to do in the summer months, so they turned up to dig the lake.

The reserve water in the lake along with water in their wells came as a pleasant surprise to the villagers. The lake will enable villagers to become self-reliant in terms of their water needs.

The lake has encouraged farmers, who have already started sowing seeds as they are confident about receiving water for irrigation this time.
